Nasdaq-100 ETFs compared: costs, tracking and concentration

Reading time: 7 min Updated: September 28, 2026

1. What the Nasdaq-100 is — and is not

It holds the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange. It is not a technology index as such (it includes retail, healthcare and consumer companies), but technology dominates it, and the ten largest positions were 45.0% of the index at 30 Jun 2026 (Nasdaq factsheet).

Most of those companies are also in the S&P 500 and the MSCI World. Adding a Nasdaq-100 ETF to a world fund does not diversify you; it doubles down on the same names.

2. Nasdaq-100 UCITS ETFs compared

3. Tracking: where the TER shows

Unlike the S&P 500, the Nasdaq-100 pays few dividends, so there is little withholding tax to optimise and little securities lending to offset costs. The physical ETFs lag the index by roughly their TER; the swap-based Amundi has tracked almost exactly:

Fund return minus index return, in percentage points, per calendar year; positive means the fund did better than its index. Source: trackingdifferences.com, rounded to 0.1. Past tracking does not guarantee future tracking.

4. Is there a Nasdaq-100 index fund?

Barely. The big index fund houses (Vanguard, iShares, Fidelity, Amundi) do not sell a Nasdaq-100 index fund in Spain. The low-cost exception is MyInvestor Nasdaq 100 FI (ISIN ES0165265002), a Spanish fund that the distributor lists at 0.30% management plus 0.08% depositary fees. For most investors in Spain, a Nasdaq-100 position therefore means an ETF, with no tax-free switching.

5. How people use it

Mostly as a satellite: a small percentage on top of a broad core. The practical risk is size creep — after a few good years the satellite quietly becomes a large part of the portfolio. Watching it as a percentage of your total net worth, not as a line in one broker, is how you notice.

This is educational content, not financial advice: it explains how these products work so you can make your own decisions, and it does not recommend buying or selling any of them.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the cheapest Nasdaq-100 ETF?

By TER, Xtrackers Nasdaq 100 (0.20%, physical), then Amundi Core Nasdaq-100 Swap (0.22%). The iShares and Invesco ETFs charge 0.30% but are much larger.

Nasdaq-100 or S&P 500?

The S&P 500 holds five times as many companies, including financials, and is less concentrated. The Nasdaq-100 is a narrower, more volatile bet on large growth companies. See the S&P 500 comparison.
