How often your movements refresh (and why your bank asks you to confirm again)
Guide contents
1. The refresh rhythm
Balances and movements refresh periodically rather than continuously, and you can always trigger a sync yourself when you need the latest number. Banks also apply their own limits on how often their data can be requested.
For a personal finance dashboard this is more than enough: you are looking at position and trend, not executing trades. If a movement from an hour ago is missing, it is almost always still pending at the bank, not lost.
2. Why consent expires
Under PSD2, the permission you give to read your accounts is not permanent. It lasts a set period, defined by each institution, and then it has to be confirmed again by you at your bank.
It is worth reading that as a feature rather than friction: no app keeps indefinite access to your financial data because you clicked once, years ago. The renewal is exactly the point where you get to decide again.
3. What happens when it expires
The connection stops bringing in new data. What was already imported stays where it is — your history, your categories and your totals up to that date do not disappear, they just stop moving forward.
Renewing is the same flow as connecting, and it takes the same couple of minutes. Once it is done, the missing movements are pulled in and your dashboard is current again.
- Your imported history is kept when consent expires.
- Renewal happens at your bank, with your usual second factor.
- You can revoke access from your bank whenever you want, without asking us.
4. Brokers and exchanges work differently
Open Banking covers banks. Crypto exchanges are connected with API keys you generate inside the exchange, and there the rule is simple: create them with read permissions only, never with withdrawal rights.
The practical consequence is that exchange connections do not expire the way bank consent does — they last until you delete the key. Reviewing your API keys once a year is a good habit regardless of which app you use.
