Crypto and index funds in the same dashboard: why it matters
Guide contents
1. Separate apps create separate mental accounts
When crypto lives in its own app, it tends to be judged on its own terms: up or down since you bought. That framing makes it look like a game with its own scoreboard rather than a part of your portfolio with a weight.
The same happens in reverse: your funds look calm and sensible because you never see them next to the volatile part. Both views are incomplete, and incomplete views are where bad decisions come from.
2. The decisions that change once you see them together
Three questions become answerable, and all three are questions people get wrong when their money is split across apps: how exposed am I really, is my next contribution going to the part that is already too heavy, and how much of my total could actually drop hard.
It is also how you notice the drift: nothing in your behaviour changed, but after a strong quarter one part of your portfolio quietly took over. You only see that in a consolidated percentage.
3. How the two sides connect technically
Banks and brokers connect through Open Banking, with read-only access authorised at your bank. Crypto exchanges connect with API keys you generate yourself inside the exchange — FinBoard supports connections such as Coinbase, Kraken and Bit2Me.
One rule matters more than any other here: generate those keys with read permissions only, never with withdrawal rights. A read-only key can show your balances and can do nothing else, and that is exactly what you want.
- Read-only API keys, no withdrawal permission, ever.
- One key per app, so you can revoke one without breaking the others.
- Review and rotate your keys periodically.
4. One currency, or the total is fiction
Crypto is usually priced in dollars or in the asset itself, your funds in euros, your broker perhaps in a third currency. Adding those up without converting them consistently produces a number that looks precise and means nothing.
A consolidated view has to do the conversion for you, with updated rates, or it is not consolidating anything. That is the difference between a total you can act on and a total that just looks nice.
