From an expenses-only app to FinBoard: what actually changes

Reading time: 6 min Updated: August 6, 2026

1. Spending is not net worth

An app focused on expenses answers "what did I spend on?". A financial copilot has to answer something else: "what do I own, where is it, and what is it worth today?" — including the fund you forgot about and the crypto you bought in 2021.

Both views matter, but they lead to different decisions. Spending tells you about your habits; net worth tells you about your position. You cannot plan anything serious with only one of them.

2. What stays the same in your day to day

The basics you are used to do not disappear: automatic bank connection, categorised transactions, budget per category and monthly review. If that habit already works for you, you keep it.

What is added is everything the expense app never had a place for: accounts across several banks, broker positions, crypto, and a total that already accounts for all of it.

3. Your categories and your history

Two practical notes when you move. First, categories: do not try to reproduce your old tree exactly. Start with the ones you actually look at and add the rest when a real transaction demands it.

Second, history: a fresh bank connection brings in a limited window of past movements, decided by each bank, not by us. If you want older history you can import it, and it is worth doing before you start comparing months.

  • Connect first, categorise later — automatic rules need real data to learn from.
  • Import older movements before drawing conclusions from month-to-month charts.
  • Add investments and crypto in the first week, not "later" — that is where the difference shows.

4. A realistic first week

Day one, connect your main bank and check that the balance matches. Day two or three, add the rest of your accounts and your broker or exchange. Then leave it alone for a few days and let the data land.

At the end of the week, open the dashboard once and ask yourself a question you could not answer before: how much of your money is not in a current account? That answer is usually the reason people stay.
